Dear Editor,

We read with interest the article- “Association of Serum Cholesterol, Triglyceride, High and Low Density Lipoprotein (HDL and LDL) Levels in Chronic Periodontitis Subjects with Risk for Cardiovascular Disease (CVD): A Cross Sectional Study” published in the journal of clinical and diagnostic research in January 2014 which is very well written by the author. They have tried to assess the cardiovascular risk in patients with chronic periodontitis and healthy individuals. But they have included the known cardiovascular patients who were under the treatment for same. Several researches have proven the increased levels of triglycerides and cholesterol in cardiovascular diseases (CVD) [1]. On the other hand few studies have established no significant relation between the two [2]. Cardiovascular risk factor is a condition that is associated with increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease. It can only be assessed in individuals who are without known cardiac diseases. In the above mentioned article the inclusion criteria of known CVD patients is confounding error. Instead of known CVD patients, known chronic periodontitis patients should be included in the study.

Response From the Author

There has been a typing error in the inclusion criteria, which got overlooked by us. It has been typed as “Subjects who had a history of CVD and who were under treatment were included in this study”. It had to be typed as “Subjects who had a history of CVD and who were under treatment were not included in the study”.

The word “not” has been accidentally missed out.

We did not include the CVD subjects in the study. The study was conducted on individual who had periodontal disease and did not have a history of CVD.

Thanks,

Dr. Patthi Basavaraj
